Q: Why do we remain on the bimah after our aliya until the next person finishes their aliya?
A: Remaining on the bimah after you have finished your blessings is a way of indicating that you are reluctant to leave the Torah. We linger because we are soulfully attached to it.
At the same time, we traditionally demonstrate our love of Torah by approaching the bimah by the shortest route. In leaving the Torah (bimah) we take the longest, most circuitous route.
